You can't help but be struck by how much better the music for the old Shatner film is than that for the new Nimoy one. I can't figure out who is responsible for Nimoy's tinny pastiche of Mahler, but some googling suggests that the awesome retro-future sound underneath Shatner was created by none other than Peter Thomas, the composer who almost single-handedly defined the sound of German sci-fi in the 1960s. (Example here and a ton of other places on the 'tubes.) I'm hoping that the electronic blips and bloops we hear are an example of the instrument he invented, the ThoWiephon...
For those Americans out there, your neighbours to the north are campaigning for Captain Kirk's appointment as the Governor General of Canada. (i.e. the head of state).
@Grrg That is awesome. I have a crappy bootleg copy of Shatner's Mystery of the Gods. Haven't watched it in a while; from what I recall, the soundtrack alternates between some nice synth stuff and cheap stock orchestral-type material. I can upload audio clips if there's interest...

ReplyDeleteGrrg, you are the godfather of fascinating EIT posts.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the only journey that Shatner ever took was the one from his couch to the refrigerator.
I wonder if Shatner can find me the best price for hotel + airfare for a trip to the ceiling of the universe?
ReplyDelete@Heather: Ha!

Live long and prosper, Canada!
I don't know if we are decended from space men, either. What I do know that the scientist at 1:00 has one amazing, space-age beard.
ReplyDeleteYou probably had to work your way up to super scientist level before the science conclave granted you permission to rock the retro-future beard.
Heroes like shatner deserve HD
ReplyDeleteI'm currently In Search Of a more awesome video than this.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of ham on that screen.

ReplyDeleteNimoy has the better voice, I'm sorry, but it's true
ReplyDeleteShatner's MYSTERIES OF THE GODS is available (semi-legally) on CosmicHex.com (and also your friendly neighborhood bittorrent).
