definitely had one of these dolls... maybe this one? http://www.retroandbeyondvintage.com/viewitem.php/retroandbeyondvintage/pd1988717/VINTAGE_80_s_1984_Hugga_bunch_doll_Tickles_and_Gigglet_in_box
GAH! I Thought this was a dream I had, I totally remember seeing that creepy doll poke its face through the mirror. File that childhood memory mystery under SOLVED. Now I just have to figure out where that alligator eating a ballerina came from.
I echo the sentiment that there needs to be a part two! I, too, had strange, latent memories of this for years and could never recall what exactly they were from. After I watched this clip I looked up the whole movie on Youtube and realized it was so much more effed up than remembered.
There's a priceless scene where the girl tells the witch - who's castle she has just broken into - that she won't kneel for her because she's an "American citizen" and Americans don't have to kneel for "nobody." She then immediately proceeds to ask if she can take (ie. steal) some of her berries and when is denied they decide to steal them anyway, and in the process end up killing the witch.
I couldn't believe such propaganda (ie. "I'm an American and if I need something I will break into your kingdom and take it whether you let me or not. And no, I don't have to show you any respect because Americans are clearly superior to the rest of the word") was so blatantly thrown in to a children's program about hugging dolls! xD Maybe I'm reading way too into it but my mind is still blown by that whole scene.
"You've been a good girl!" "Not THAT good..." "My insides are squishy, but they'll dry out." Dear God...the demons will hug me to death in my sleep. o_o
I am so happy you found this, EIT. One of my last-ever visits to the local video store was to watch this video for the first time since second grade. You have deftly summarized why I felt that any very young child who dares watch this movie will be scarred for life.
As far as the real ending, they get back to the girl's room through the mirror with the aforementioned stolen berries that make people young (good work finding the subtext there that I'd totally missed, Mo). However - and this was kind of a shocking twist for a little kids' movie - said berries are lost along the way. Fortunately, Grandma is saved by... you'll never guess. Yeah, that's right - HUGGING!!!
And yes, the baseball cap is a plot point, though not a very big one. However, the difference between a hat and a computer had to be stated to the mirrorworld demon doll thing.
AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG AND HUG
does anyone remember the hugga bunch tape that you listened to in a tape player I used to listen to that all the time some of the lyrics for a song were "there's a face in the mirror a face that I see it's so lonely and gloomy it doesn't look like me" if anyone remembers this please post back!

ReplyDeletethis is going to give me serious nightmares
ReplyDelete...was this written by Clive Barker? That last bit was like Meet the Feebles + Dante's Inferno. Gah.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to need to see three more minutes of the Hell scene.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I went on a journey to "the other side of the mirror" like that, ayahuasca was involved. Pretty accurate.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, good ole fashion nightmare fuel. Drink it up!
ReplyDeleteThe kid gets a gift and the first thing out of her mouth is "Why?"
ReplyDeleteChristmas must've been real fun over at the Hugga Bunch house.
"When i was little, i heard voices in my mirror too" OK Grandma, so YOU'RE responsible for passing down the mental illness!!! Gee, thanks Grandma!
ReplyDeleteOh wow. This reaches new heights of terrible.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I never hug.
ReplyDeleteI'm sleeping with a baseball bat by my mirror tonight, just in case of hugs.
ReplyDeleteI had a tape of this growing up, it only gets more and more horrifying.
ReplyDeleteWatching this makes me realize how fucked it up is now... :|
This is like the worst thing in the world.
ReplyDeleteCocaine is a hell of a drug.
ReplyDeleteIt's like the last episode of "Twin Peaks".
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nightmares :(
ReplyDeleteSo.........
ReplyDelete.........the Spice Nuggets.
What are they and where can I get them?
P.s.
Schedule Ghoul for back to back shifts next week...
He still owes us a day.
:)
"Grandma, you smell like Bengay
ReplyDeleteand poo."
This could be a great research study on how schizophrenia is genetic.
ReplyDeleteGrandma had it, so it skipped a generation and now she has it.
Poor kid.
So this is why people side hug instead...
ReplyDeleteWTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.....
ReplyDeletethanks for the nightmares EIT.
i've always wanted a nude ginger muppet. fully functional?
ReplyDeleteWHY IS IT WEARING A ST. LOUIS CARDINALS HAT?
ReplyDeleteAAAH! I haven't seen this since I was 5. I remember her putting peanut butter on her pancakes... and I vaguely remember all of the hell beasts.
ReplyDeleteMore like "EVERYTHING IS TERRIFYING."
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite vid of the year, so far. You're going to have to work extra hard to one-up this one, EIT.
ReplyDeleteThat's the little girl from The Secret Garden!
ReplyDeleteThe one with Bastien, not the weird one with the blonde children who were related.
I never stopped laughing after it came out of the mirror. Comedy gold.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen that video since the first grade. Thanks, guys for bringing back all those horrible memories I tried for years to suppress.
ReplyDeleteWait, so how does it end?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the anonymous assessment of it seeming like the ending of Twin Peaks.
But it's a little kid in a movie about hugs. (Devil hugs, maybe, but it's still a kid's movie.)
HOW DOES THIS END? I REFUSE to believe this is the end.
Can you have a part 2? Pleeeeeeeeeeease?
I always thought those doll were creepy

ReplyDelete"And you just sit their eating space nuggets like nothing's happening!"
ReplyDeleteone of the best ever. keep it up.

Oh, and the latent memory was definitely the part where the doll gets thrown in the washer. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteMan, me and my sister used to watch the video all the time when we were kids. So creepy. Thanks for bring back the memories eit!
ReplyDeleteThis really is a horror film.
ReplyDeleteGah!
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't this have a "NSFW" warning on it?!
Looked up Grams on IMDB. She died the following year. Not enough fruit from the Youngberry Tree.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch this movie all the time when I was a kid! Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteIf you are stoned, do NOT watch this video. I will be sleeping with a wrench under my pillow tonight.
ReplyDelete"You've been a good girl!" "Not THAT good..."
ReplyDelete"My insides are squishy, but they'll dry out."
Dear God...the demons will hug me to death in my sleep. o_o
between the video and the comments - I've totally sharted. thanks.
ReplyDeleteI adored this as a child...how did I not see how creepy it was when I was four years old and everything was creepy?
