  2. These things look pretty destructive. I'm afraid to ask what will happen if I watch a Blu-Ray.

  4. X-TREEEEEEME HIGH FIDELITY! This is the first EIT video I distinctly remember seeing.

Weird how the promise of audio commentary showed MST3K-style silhouettes on the screen. Did any DVD actually do that?

  6. If DVDs have the power to make an airplane crash into your face, I wonder what powers laser discs had?

  7. It'll never catch on.

  8. Laser Discs had the power to make you get off of your couch and flip the things over half way through the movie.

  9. Oh man, who doesn't remember when Don LaFontaine spelled it all out for us... A movie! On a disc! The size of a CD!

I think it was the Ghostbusters DVD that did the filmmaker silhouettes. Also, on the UHF disc Weird Al uses a hidden 'alternate angle' function to jump on screen during his commentary, basically to surprise you.

All pointless gimmicks, of course, designed to get the DVD menace into your home, much like 'Digital 3D' put subpar video projectors into all of our cinemas.

  12. "Digitizing all of our movies for DVD, what's the worst that can happen?" - MPAA circa 1999

I second jv's comment why do I always hear an unusual amount of sword play while viewing hi-fidelity demos?...

Did you hear those swords honey? That was frickin amazing, I'll take it!!

  14. The funny thing about this is that they used to put these DVD promos in with the trailers on VHS tapes. You're supposed to be blown away by the amazing visuals and sword clanking and think, "man, I wish my VCR could do THAT!" while you were in fact watching it on your VCR.
